According to the ABS, “We’re still a nation of home owners, or aspirational home owners, with 31% of Australian homes owned outright and 34% owned with a mortgage – leaving 31% being rented. However, the proportion renting is slowly growing, while those who have the good fortune of owning their home outright are declining”.
Interestingly, in the 2011 Census 29.6% of Australian homes were rental properties, compared to 28.1 per cent in 2006. In 1991 26.6% of Australian home were rentals, which means the percentage of rentals increased by 4% over a 25 year period.
